What is NotebookLM?
NotebookLM is Google's research and thinking assistant for your own sources. Rather than answering from general training data, it builds an expert view of the documents, links and media you add, then answers questions using only that material and shows the exact passage behind each response. Google renamed the product Gemini Notebook in July 2026, and existing notebooks carried over with the change; it remains available as a standalone tool on the web and on mobile.
The workflow starts with sources. A notebook can hold PDFs, Google Docs and Slides, websites, YouTube videos, audio files, images and pasted text, each up to a size ceiling, and the product summarises them and draws connections between them as you add more. Sources stay attached to the notebook, so you can return to a project months later and still follow the same citations, and removing a source shows how the answers change without it. Once sources are in place you ask questions in ordinary language, and answers arrive with inline citations so you can verify the claim in the original document rather than trusting the summary.
Generation features turn a source set into other formats. Privacy is stated plainly on the site. Google says it does not use NotebookLM content to train generative AI models unless you submit feedback, and that uploads, queries and answers on Workspace accounts are never used for training even when feedback is sent.
